I suppose the worst thing about articles on drug abuse is this. They are normally written by left wing do gooders who know nothing about it. At best they have had a few puffs on a spliff when they were at college, Said "It doesn't effect me", Lay down stared at the ceiling for an hour and then spewed up in the john, and then said "Never again".
I have been in the music industry most of my life. Whether you like it or not you cannot get away from drugs of one kind or another. Half the time you don't whether you are addicted or immune. In my time I have taken most things at one time or another including: Dope, LSD, speed, cocaine, In fact every variation of all the above. I have never taken heroin, morphine or any other syringe or crack based stuff, so I will not comment on these,(I thought I would ask friends who have much experience of these to comment. But unfortunately they are all dead).
It is my view that one of the most dangerous drugs is LSD. Most drugs just wreck your body eventually, However LSD is so powerful it can alter your mind forever in 8 hours. I discovered this drug in the late sixties. I thought I had found the secret of life, nothing would have been able to convince me I had not.
Let me say this, When you do end up having a bad trip on acid, (It always gets you in the end) it is just about the worse experience you can ever have. As I said it's not physical it's mental. In my case I completely lost my sanity, I did not know who or where I was. But the most frightening thing was I thought I would never get back to sanity. Even to this day I remember the voice in my head saying: "That's it, You done it now Phil, Pushed the boat out to far man, One step over the line, And you ain't never going to get back. Just imagine thinking that, And even worse believing it!
It had a major effect on me that lasted months, Even a beer made me start slipping back, It leaves head scars scars that never heal, Needless to say I have never taken it ever since. Other stuff like speed and coke etc. are dangerous in another way. They simply wreck your body, It's your brain that likes these. You feel that you are invincible and you can do anything. I have noticed when I have used various drugs in the studio in the past I thought I had played great. However when I listened back straight they sounded crap and had to be re recorded.
As with almost any drugs they are just a way to escape, I started taking Benzedrine at the same time as my mate Kev, I kicked it after a few weeks he carried on, It took him down Heroin Road, Kev's dead now he was only 23. I think it depends a lot on the personality of who is taking them, As for escaping it depends on what you are escaping from. You have to be careful, You may be escaping into a prison cell. I have been smoking dope since I was 16 I have done all my life. I reckon I would not still be here if it was that bad. However I gave it up a few years ago. The reason for this is that the dope you buy now is mostly what in the old days we called "formula" or cut, In them days they just cut the hash with OXO cubes or in the weed you would get loads of hemp seeds or parsley sage rosemary and thyme, They did this for no other reason than to make up the weight. The stuff you can buy now is also cut The difference is it's laced with chemicals and other addictive ingredients, It's nothing like proper cannabis, it does not smell or feel like it.
I think one of the most dangerous drugs you can buy nowadays is alcohol, This can destroy your brain and your body, It's everywhere you don't have to be a down and out, I know Doctors, Teachers people from every walk of life who have been taken out by this one. Alcohol is not happy with your mind, It will also destroy your body, Take your family and friends, and everything you own. After it has taken away all these it will take away your soul and then your life, But hey it's legal so it must be OK, Right?
